Dating back to the year 1984, the Shanmugha Arts Science Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) aspires to achieve global standards in delivering value education. The SASTRA’s Hub for Research and Innovation (SHRI) endeavours to produce substantial research in transdisciplinary domains and is endowed with futuristic infrastructure, including its huge beehive of interdisciplinary research centres. The university has a dedicated Department of Training and Placements which puts persistent efforts to render the right job opportunities to its students. The university has been bestowed ‘Deemed to be University’ status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is conferred a Grade ‘A++’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
SASTRA has a dedicated branch that offers online and distance education, namely the Directorate of Distance and Online Education. It was founded with the vision to offer exceptional education in distance learning mode to those who were excluded from the mainstream education system. The directorate offers its courses in a modular framework and runs efficient personal contact classes for its students. It also offers the massive online open courses (MOOCs) of the Swayam portal.
The Directorate of Distance and Online Education runs virtual contact classes for each of their courses for a stipulated period of time. The virtual contact classes establish students’ primary contact with their teachers and render them a platform to voice their doubts and opinions. Through these classes, the directorate offers crucial guidance to the students regarding administrative tasks and their future career pathways.
The Directorate of Distance and Online Education provides courses using a credit-based system. Through the credit system, the students, especially those who are working professionals, can complete their courses at their own pace, in accordance with their workload.
The directorate proffers all its courses in a modular framework. The modular framework divides the course into smaller, manageable portions that a student can work on at a suitable pace. It also increases the effectiveness of the learning process and is suitable for working professionals.
The Directorate of Distance and Online Education offers its students to study massive online open courses (MOOCs). These courses are available on the government-initiated SWAYAM portal and are free of cost. The courses are dynamic in nature and offer learning material in inventive formats.
