Established in the middle of the 19th century, the University of Madras is a prestigious state university situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. The university endeavours to create a research-based academic ecosystem for its students. For its incessant efforts to impart insightful education, the university has been graded A by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and has been recognised by the University Grants Commission as a ‘University with Potential for Excellence’.
With the aim to deliver comprehensive education in distance learning mode, the University of Madras set up the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) in the year 1981. The institute offers print as well as digital resources to its students of distance education. The latter is offered through the institute’s efficient Centre for Web-based E-Learning. The institute houses a large network of well-equipped learning centres to offer students with needful guidance. The institute has been recognised by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), the sole authority on distance education in India.
The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) has received its mandatory approval from the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), the sole authority of distance education in India. Also, the institute has received its mandatory approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). These approvals provide the institute with needful credibility for its courses in distance learning mode.
The Institute of Distance Education (IDE) imparts distance education via a more flexible approach of a Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The Choice-Based Credit System enables a student to study courses of other disciplines while pursuing a degree in a particular discipline. It facilitates a student to explore his/her/their interests and get equipped with broad knowledge to pursue his/her/their professional goals.
To minimise the communication gap between the teacher and the student in the distance learning process, the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) at the University of Madras conducts online personal contact classes. These classes facilitate in-person interaction of students with teachers so that the students can acquire a clear understanding of their conceptual knowledge without the need to travel to the main campus of the institute or its learner support centres.
Other than delivering distance education through printed self-instructed materials, the institute has a Centre for Web-based E-learning for students. The centre has exclusive responsibility for supplying students with comprehensive video lectures to assist them in their learning and lessen the disparity between distance and mainstream education.
For the assistance of students at each stage of distance education, the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) has set up a large network of learner support centres. These centres guide students from the admission process till the time of completion of their degrees. Equipped with strategic infrastructural facilities, the institute provides students with much-needed counselling in the academic domain.

The University of Madras has a single window admission centre, where the students can deposit the filled in application form along with the relevant documents for verification.
For the online application process, a candidate has to first register on the website. After registration, the candidate has to log in to the account, fill out the details and upload the required documents. After submitting the filled application form, the candidate has to make payment via the given mode of payment.
A candidate can also choose to apply for admission through a learner support centre. To do so, the candidate has to download the prospectus cum application form from the website of the institute. He/ She/they have to fill out the form, attach the documents and submit the form in person at the learner support centre to the designated authority.
