Established under the Gujarat Private Universities Act 2009, UPL University of Sustainable Technology was initially started in 2011 with the establishment of Shroff S.R Rotary Institute of Chemical Technology (SRICT). It started with undergraduate courses in engineering and is affiliated with Gujarat Technical University and AICTE. UPL University has two institutes that offer industry-oriented programmes namely: Institute of Chemical Technology and Institute of Environmental Science & Technology. It is a multidisciplinary university that pays special emphasis on research and development.
The university focuses on imparting the students with top career opportunities by providing adequate placement and training opportunities. The most differentiating feature at UPL University is the system of ‘100 Points Activity’ which is the first university to implement such a system in India. In this system, the students are required to earn a minimum of 100 points under different curricular activities. This way they get prepared for various skills which are demanded in the industry.
To cultivate creativity among the students, Gujarat Technical University in 2015 started a scheme of 100 Points Activity under which the students are required to earn a minimum of 100 points under different curricular activities. The scheme was set as a mandatory requirement for earning a BE degree. Because industries need people who have leadership qualities and who are creative and innovative, this scheme fosters the development of such skills in the students.
The training and placement office at UPL works relentlessly in providing the students with top career opportunities. Efforts are made to equip the students with value based and quality education and in making them industry ready to face any changing demands. Many government and private sector companies participate in the recruitment process. At Shroff S.R Rotary Institute of Chemical Technology(SRICT), it is made sure that every student undertakes vocational training for one month after the third year so that the students gain practical experience during their study programme.
There are various initiatives taken by the university for skills enhancement of the students like Peer Development Initiatives(PLI), Personality Development Skills, Language and Communication Skills, English Proficiency Course(EPC) among many others. In order to increase the interest among the students to take part in these initiatives they are given awards and attendance for attending these programmes. These programmes thus help in building confidence among the students and also improve their personality.
The university has developed a Centre of Excellence in Process Safety which provides various certificate and diploma courses to students and industry officials. Consultation services for 3D Modelling, Process Hazard Identification, Safety Training, and Risk Analysis Study are some of the facilities offered by the centre.
The university has introduced various scholarships schemes such as Free Ship Card, Mukhya Mantri Yuva Swavlabman Yojna in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat. The university believes that finances should not be a hindrance in education.
The university has collaborated with many foreign universities and organisations of repute at national and international level. Various departments have partnered with universities and centres, such as Miami University, Shree Ambica Salt Works, AIMA, and others for a better learning experience for the students.
