Established in 1996, Kannur University is a public university that has its campuses spread across Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayanad districts of the state of Kerala. Through its diligent Research and Development Cell, the University endeavours to provide sophisticated infrastructure to inculcate research capability and critical ability in its students from multiple disciplines. The University houses a UGC-HRD Centre which educates and trains teachers to improve upon their teaching. This way, the Centre maintains its exceptional standards in teaching.
Kannur University founded its distance learning arm, the School of Distance Education (SDE), in 2002. Started with the vision to impart education to the people residing in the remote areas of the Wayanad District, it now offers distance courses for undergraduate, postgraduate, and certificate-level degrees across various disciplines. The students are provided course material in printed form, or they can access it online through SDE’s learning management system called SmartWeb. To support its students to prosper in their careers, the school offers students the required counselling. Through its Personal Contact Programme, the school facilitates appropriate mentoring by expert teachers.
To offer efficient education services to its distance learning students, the School of Distance Education (SDE) of Kannur University has its Online Course Management and Support System called SmartWeb, where students can easily access the required course material.
The School of Distance Education offers its students mentoring by its distinguished faculty. The students are given the right guidance through the counselling services provided to them.

To seek admission in theSchool of Distance Education, a candidate has to apply online. The first step is the payment of the application fee. After paying the fees online, a candidate has to submit an online application for Private Registration in undergraduate, postgraduate, and certificate courses. The fee consists of a Private Registration Fee, Matriculation Fee, Recognition Fee, and Postal Charges.
