Established in the year 1982, Bharathiar University is a UGC-recognised, reputed educational institution for higher education. With a clear intent to deliver research-driven education, the university houses several well-equipped, advanced research institutes and has received grants under the Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). The university also enjoys strategic partnerships with internationally renowned organisations, such as Harvard Business School, for the academic evolution of its students. The university has received UGC-DEB and is NAAC A++ accredited.
The Bharathiar University established the School of Distance Education (SDE) in 1991-92 to provide holistic education at a minimal fee. Through its huge network of learner support centres, the university aims to disseminate education to every nook and corner of the state of Tamil Nadu. The average course fee ranges between INR 45,000 to INR 75,000.
The students enrolled in distance learning courses at the School of Distance Education (SDE) can avail the assistance and counselling of its huge network of proficient learner support centres. Spread throughout the state of Tamil Nadu, these centres also run Personal Contact Programmes (PCPs) for the benefit of the students.
To deliver job-oriented, extensive education, the School of Distance Education (SDE) offers learning resources in printed as well as digital form. The digital learning resources can be easily accessed from the school’s website. The school also provides a soft copy of the resources on a CD to each and every student.
The School of Distance Education (SDE) of Bharathiar University offers admission through lateral entry mode for some of its courses. The motive behind lateral admissions is to save the time and effort for the students and provide them with better employment opportunities earlier than if they were enrolled in the regular mode of education.
Usually, distance education is bereft of the fundamental teacher-student interaction. The school administers contact classes for each and every distance learning programme to furnish students with crucial interaction with experienced faculty. Through personal Contact Programmes, the students can have an engaging classroom experience.

The School of Distance Education (SDE) offers online as well as offline admission in its distance education programmes.
For an online application for admission, a candidate has to register on the admission portal, fill in the required credentials, upload the mandatory documents and make payment via given online modes of payment.
For the offline mode of application, a candidate has to either obtain the application form from the office of the School of Distance Education (SDE) or one of its learner support centres or download it from the website of the school. He/she/they have to fill out the form, attach copies of the mandatory documents (including the demand draft or the challan), and send it by post to the given address.
If a candidate seeks spot admission, he/she/they can visit the main office of the School of Distance Education (SDE) with the filled-in application form.
The school also offers admission through lateral entry mode.
