A name-sake of an archaic hub of learning, the Nalanda Open University is an eminent public education organisation. It was established in the year 1987 and envisions offering distance education to those outside the mainstream education system. The university offers a well-structured curriculum for courses in varied branches of knowledge. It has been recognised by the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), the sole authority for regularising distance education in our country.
Through its vast network of study centres, the university delivers distance education to every nook and cranny of Bihar. The university also houses a strategic infrastructure that includes a well-resourced library, a modern computer laboratory, and a large examination centre. To facilitate quick learning of its students, the university provides an online archive of question papers to help them assess and improve their academic performance.
A student needs to constantly test and improve whatever he/she/they have learned. To facilitate students to evaluate their learnings and make necessary amendments, the Nalanda Open University makes available old question papers on its website. Any student can download question papers from anywhere around the world according to their programme.
- The Nalanda Open University is endowed with a well-stocked library with an array of resources. A student can access these resources for better understanding. Also, the university’s modern computer laboratory and huge examination centre cater to the academic needs of the students of distance education.
The university has a huge system of around 89 study centres across the historic state of Bihar. Through its essential academic and counselling services, the study centres integrate students into the distance education system.

The Nalanda Open University provides offline applications for the purpose of admission.
A candidate can obtain the prospectus as well as the application form in exchange for a demand draft in person or by sending it by registered post.
The candidate can fill out the form, affix the photocopies of the required documents, and submit it to the given address personally or by registered post.
