Established in the year 1947, Gauhati University is among the oldest universities in Northeast India. It started as an affiliating, teaching and residential university. The objective of the university is to bring social, economic, cultural, moral and spiritual upliftment to Assamese students. Gauhati University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
Gauhati University established the Centre for Distance and Online Education to extend the scope of quality education with the most popular courses, such as MA, MSc and MCom. Additionally, the university has grown exponentially in all other respects as well, such as technological advancement, student support services, counselling services and much more. The university aims to offer quality education and bring more opportunities to the Northeastern region of India. The university has an e-learning portal, Radio Luit, that acts as a community radio centre where individuals are encouraged to share their stories. This provides distance learning students a chance to explore something other than academics.
The university offers student support services to the students. It helps the students to explore opportunities beyond academics with e-learning study material and resources, personnel contact programmes, tutorials and study centres.
Gauhati University has launched the first campus radio of the Northeast on March 1, 2011. The main objective of the community radio is to share stories and experiences and help students get familiarised with the media industry.
The university has implemented approximately 100 computers under Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) that is connected to the campus LAN and a Virtual Digital Learning Environment. All the classes are conducted via FOSS to create a better learning experience for the students who have enrolled in distance courses.

A student can apply either online or offline. For offline application, a student can visit the university campus or any of the authorised study centres of the university with all the requisite documents. After reaching there, a student can obtain the application form, fill it, attach all the documents, and pay the application fee.
In case of an online application, a student has to fill out the online application form by visiting the university’s official website. A student will have to take a print out of the filled application form and submit it to any of the authorised study centres along with all the requisite documents for verification. After the verification, a student has to submit the admission fee.
Accepted Modes of Payment:
Offline Mode: In cash by visiting the authorised study centre or by demand draft.
It is important to understand here that merely applying for a college does not guarantee admission. You need to keep an eye on the admission notifications released by the institute.
