Established in 1982 as the Andhra Pradesh Open University, the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University was renamed in 1991. It aims to offer equal opportunities to all the sections of society. With its unique approach towards education, the university has enabled a diverse set of individuals such as farmers, housewives, labourers, etc. to pursue higher education. The university has gained recognition from the Distance Education Bureau (DEB), UGC. In order to ensure education for all, the university provide interactive material for learning in three different languages, that is, English, Urdu and Telugu.
In order to provide maximum learning resources to its students, the university makes use of multimedia channels. It runs various audio-visual programs through television, radio, cassettes, etc. The university has set up various Learner Support Centres to guide students through academic and administrative queries. To facilitate a smooth learning process, the university provides students with printed material and also conducts contact-cum-counselling classes.
To make up for the lack of student-teacher interaction in the distance mode of education, the university organizes contact-cum-counselling classes. These classes help make the learning interactive. Students get a chance to interact with each other as well as the faculty and get their doubts resolved.
The university organizes various extension activities such as webinars, workshops, guest lectures, conferences, awareness drives, etc. to provide students with gainful insights of the real world.
The university has a dedicated Alumni Portal wherein the students can connect with the alumni of the university and get guidance from them. The students can also get career guidance from the alumni.
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University has taken various initiatives to make sure that students get maximum learning opportunities. To facilitate the same, they have introduced tele and radio lessons so that students can learn in an interactive manner from anywhere.
The university has in place a fully-furnished library to supplement students with vast learning resources. The library is equipped with books and other material to enrich students’ knowledge.
In order to provide the best online services to students, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University has a Computer Centre. The centre ensures the smooth admission process, examination registrations and other necessary services.
The university has set-up a Help Desk to provide necessary assistance to the students. Students can contact the Help Desk at their respective study centres to resolve their queries.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University accepts applications through online mode. A student has to fill in the online application form available at the website followed by the payment of the first year tuition fee. Once both the steps are completed, the students can download their identity card.
