With the vision to achieve exceptional standards in education and research, Patna University was established in 1917 and is one of the earliest universities in India. It offers varied undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses, encompassing many disciplines. Its well-developed infrastructure, consisting of an internet-aided Central Library and well-equipped dispensary, serves the students across campus. The University works in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Planning to run a Centre for Population Studies and Publication Health.
Patna University founded the Directorate of Distance Education in 1974 to offer distance learning opportunities to anyone, who wishes to pursue higher studies, but can’t do a regular course. It provides well-structured and comprehensive learning material in printed form to ease the distance learning process for its students. Apart from providing printed material, the University offers easy access to all the material and assignments on its website. The courses offered are Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.), Bachelor of Library and Information Science (BLIS), Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDFM), Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism (PGDJ), and other vocational courses.
In order to make the learning process effective and extensive, the Directorate of Distance Education of Patna University offers its students easy, online access to the course material on its website. Apart from using printed study material, the students can easily retrieve the required learning materials and assignments from the university website.
The Directorate of Distance Education at Patna University runs on the principle of two-way communication between teachers and students. After the teachers evaluate the response sheets of the students, the university sends them back to the students. This is done to know the students’ feedback on the learning materials and examination and suggestions for the same. This teacher-student interaction facilitates the university to make amendments to its distance learning curriculum.

The University aims to provide its distance learning students with the same learning experience as its students in regular courses. Therefore, the course material and the duration of the course are the same for both the distance and the regular students. Moreover, distance students have the same examination as regular students.
