Jamia Millia Islamia is a Dual Mode University that offers various programs through regular as well as distance mode of education. The university has always envisioned to fulfil the aim to cater to the interests of the students from diverse communities in accordance with India’s composite culture. The university has fostered a great learning atmosphere by adopting a unique approach to provide education through English, Hindi, and Urdu language, at almost all levels. Over the years, the university has been a front-runner in promoting national character and cultural harmony. The university has been rewarded with the prestigious “A++” grade by NAAC which reflects its innovative approach and academic excellence.
Jamia Millia Islamia launched the Centre for Distance and Open Learning, with assistance from the Distance Education Council, in September 2002, to provide quality education and great career opportunities to the disadvantaged sections of society. The university offers self-learning print material to students to compensate for the lack of regualr classes. The self-learning material is supplemented by audio and video programmes which provide deep insights into the respective domains. To strengthen the teacher-learner interaction, the university offer one-on-one counselling sessions and contact programmes to distance students.

Self-study enables students to learn at their own pace. It also allows them to focus on the areas they are most interested in. Furthermore, self-learning material is crucial for distance education as it bridges the gap between the learner and the instructor.
Jamia Millia Islamia University organises various active counselling sessions and workshops for the students wherein they get to learn about various corporate activities. It helps the students develop a “Problem Solving” approach as they learn to understand the factors contributing to their problems. It, at the same time, also helps them to look for solutions through behavioural and psychological changes.
Students enjoy the flexibility of choice in terms of the subjects they want to study. The University has a fixed scheme of examination and prompt declaration of result. Also, there are Personal Contact Programmes and Workshops.
