UGC / Innovative University of the Year-2022
Founded in 2010, with the vision to contribute to the realisation of an equitable, just, humane and sustainable society, Azim Premji University dates back its roots to Azim Premji Foundation that made an impact in the quality of education in India. The university began education and development as its programmes along with courses for the working professionals. It has 50% students from small towns and rural areas as the Azim Premji Foundation had the vision to change the quality of education in the country at a deep level covering the rural parts too.
The university focuses on the ‘Learning through Practice’ concept in regard to which there are University-School Connect Programmes initiated in which the students visit the schools and gain practical exposure by observing and working along with the teachers at the school in the MA in Education programme. There is emphasis laid on the translations aspect wherein the academic learning and teachings happen in languages like Hindi and Kannada to bridge the language gap amongst diverse groups of students in the university. Various organisations from non-profit sector, social sector, schools, government, and CSR come for the campus recruitment.
APU believes that Learning through practice is a key component. In view of that the university has crafted a unique MA in Education programme that includes not just theory but research, practice, policy and planning in education. This way a regular weekly practicum is taken up in which the students get to visit institutes and schools and hence gain practical experience by working and observing with the teachers in teaching and lesson plans. The collaborating institutes include not just schools but Anganwadis, Teacher Education Institutes, and community based organisations.
To improve human conditions and to build harmonious relationships with the villages around the institute there are various Community Engagement Initiatives taken like engaging with the surrounding Gram Panchayats, strengthening public schools by collaborating with NGOs and to help students and youth build high order skills. Sessions on soft skills and English proficiency for youth are taken up to build their confidence and help them make a better person for the society as a whole.
As there are students coming from diverse parts of the country and different languages might become a barrier in their learning. In regard to that, APU started a large-scale translations initiative to bridge this gap by working on translating academic reading and learning materials into diverse languages. The translations are for the teachers and educators in various higher education programmes with a focus on languages like hindi and kannada. APU is amongst the largest translation initiatives to exist in the country with a network of 450 translators over 20 leading academic institutions.
To make the students aware about social entrepreneurship, a social enterprise cell was set up in 2015 at APU, so that the like minded individuals can share their ideas and lead towards creating their own social ventures. Various workshops, capacity building programmes and on campus interactions are conducted which involve the alumni and external resource people who share their experiences.
