JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) is a national-level engineering entrance examination in India conducted for admission to various undergraduate engineering programmes nationwide. The exam is divided into two parts – JEE Main and JEE Advanced. JEE Main is conducted twice a year and serves as the qualifying exam for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and a few other top engineering colleges in India.

What is the JEE Main Exam?

JEE Main is an exam that evaluates candidates for admission to B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Plan programmes at NITs, IIITs, and Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). Aspirants must clear JEE Main to be eligible for the JEE (Advanced), a prerequisite for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the exam four times a year. It is conducted in 13 languages across all Indian states and multiple foreign countries.

Purpose of JEE Main Exam

The JEE Main exam aims to assess the candidates’ knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics and evaluate their problem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking abilities.

In addition, the exam serves as a screening test to select the most deserving candidates for admission to the top engineering institutes in India, such as the IITs, NITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions.

The National Testing Agency conducts the JEE Main exam as an online computer-based test.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for JEE-Mains, candidates must have scored 75% marks or be placed in the top 20 percentile in Class 12 of any recognised board. However, the qualifying marks for SC/ST candidates should be 65%.

Before filling out the JEE Main application form, it is essential to meet the eligibility criteria set by NTA. The detailed eligibility criteria for JEE Main exam 2023 are provided below.

• There is no age limit to appear for JEE Mains. 
• Candidates must have passed class 12 or equivalent exams. However, class 12 appearing candidates are also eligible.
• Candidates should have a minimum of 5 subjects with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as mandatory subjects.
• Candidates should have secured at least 75% in class 12 for admission. For BArch admissions, at least 50% marks should have been secured.
• Candidates are only allowed 6 attempts at JEE Mains.

Registration Process & Fee

Candidates can register for JEE Main via the official website jeemain.nta.nic.in. To complete the registration process, students need to provide a valid email address, contact number and other necessary details and documents including payment information, a scanned photograph with name and date, and a scanned signature on a white page within the 3.5 x 1.5 cm box size.

2. From the drop-down menu, choose the JEE Main Application Form 2023
3. Choose “New Registration” from the drop-down menu
4. To complete the registration process, fill in the necessary information and click on the “Submit” button

Upon completing the JEE Main registration process, candidates will receive an email and text message containing their application form number and password at their registered email address and mobile number.

Once the registration process is complete, candidates will be directed to a page where they can fill out the detailed application form. They must provide information about their educational qualifications, parents’ details, communication and permanent addresses, and exam centre preferences.

After this step, they must upload scanned copies of their passport-sized photograph and signature followed by the payment of the application fee. The application form will be submitted instantly once the application fee is successfully paid.

Counselling Process

JoSAA, which stands for Joint Seat Allocation Authority, manages the counselling sessions for JEE Main. Only those candidates who meet the JEE Main cutoff scores will be eligible to participate in the counselling process, which is a crucial step towards securing admission to NITs and other colleges.

The JEE Main counselling for 2023 is anticipated to occur online in July-August 2023.

• Registration: Completion of the registration process is mandatory for candidates who wish to participate in JoSAA counselling.
• Selection and Locking of Choices: Once registered, candidates must enter their preferred institutes and branches. JEE Advanced qualified candidates can apply for seats in all institutes, whereas candidates who have only cleared JEE Mains can select seats in NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. After filling in their choices, candidates can lock them; otherwise, they will be automatically locked before the results of Round 1.
• Declaration of Seat Allotment: Seat allocation in the institutes will be based on a candidate’s rank, category, preferences, and seat availability. The outcome of the seat allocation process is announced online. Once a candidate is allocated a seat, they must download the provisional seat allotment letter and pay a seat acceptance fee of Rs. 25,000 (for General, EWS, and OBC category candidates) or Rs. 15000 (for SC and ST category candidates).
• Reporting at Centres: Candidates who have been assigned a seat in an IIT must report to the nearest IIT, whereas those who have been allocated a seat in an NIT, IIIT, or GFTI may report to any nearby NIT, IIIT, or GFTI. At the reporting centre, the candidates’ documents will be verified, and they will be given the option to either FREEZE, FLOAT, or SLIDE the allotted seat.
• FREEZE means the candidate accepts the allotted seat at the institute and branch.
• FLOAT implies that the candidate wishes to participate in future rounds of counselling. The candidate may be assigned a seat in any of the institutes they have previously locked during choice filling, with a higher preference than the one previously allotted.
• If the candidate chooses SLIDE, they may continue to participate in future rounds of counselling. However, the institute will remain the same, and only the branch assigned may be altered in future rounds.

Important Exam Guidelines

The following are the guidelines for JEE Main exam day that all candidates must strictly adhere to:

1. Candidates will not be permitted to enter the examination centre after the gate closing time, and they will only be allowed to exit the premises once the exam has concluded.
2. Candidates who wear special attire for religious reasons are advised to arrive at the exam centres early to allow for thorough checking and mandatory frisking.
3. To be allowed into the exam centre, candidates must bring their admit card and all necessary documents. 
4. Before arriving at the JEE Main exam centres, candidates must complete the self-declaration form by affixing a passport-sized photograph and placing their left-hand thumb impression in the designated space.
5. Candidates must take their seats promptly upon the opening of the examination hall. However, they can log in and read the instructions before the start of the exam.
6. The examination hall will provide pens/pencils and blank paper for rough work. Applicants must write their name and roll number at the top of the sheet provided. Before leaving the examination hall, candidates must return the sheet to the invigilator.
7. Candidates must enter the necessary details in the attendance sheet, sign it, and paste their photograph in the designated area.
8.  They must ensure that their left thumb impression is clear and does not smudge the attendance sheet.
9. Candidates who claim PwD reservation must bring their PwD certificate issued by the competent authority to the exam centre.

It is recommended to start preparing for JEE Main from Class XI onwards. This is because it provides ample time for healthy and effective planning, and it may save you from having to take a drop after Class XII. Some important tips for acing the JEE Main exams are.

1. Students must keep the concepts simple, as the questions on the exam can be set in various ways. Additionally, students should aim to answer complicated questions using simple definitions.
2. Once the learning process is complete, candidates must practise exam-oriented questions. This will help them evaluate their understanding and identify any errors which must be corrected.
3. Different books use different principles to explain methodologies. For example, some texts use technical jargon, while others provide simple explanations. Candidates should choose books that are most suitable for them and written in a language they are familiar with.
4. Solving sample papers is essential for students to familiarise themselves with the test pattern, difficulty level, relevant topics, marking Scheme, and time constraints.
