Established in the year 1947, Gauhati University is among the oldest universities in North-East India. It started functioning on January 26, 1948 as an affiliating, teaching and residential university. The objective of the university is to bring social, economic, cultural, moral and spiritual upliftment of Assamese students. Gauhati University is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).
Gauhati University established the Institute of Distance and Open Learning in 1998. It started with approximately 500 students in 6 courses and today it is a multidisciplinary university with more than 15,000 students. Additionally, the university has grown exponentially in all other respects as well such as technological advancement, student support services, counselling services and much more. The Institute of Distance and Open Learning aims to offer quality education and bring more opportunities to the North-Eastern region of India. The university has an E-learning portal, Radio Luit, that acts as a Community Radio Center where individuals are encouraged to share their stories. This provides distance learning students a chance to explore something other than academics.

The Institute of Distance and Open Learning, Gauhati University offers student support services to the students. It helps the students to explore opportunities beyond academics with E-learning Study Material and Resources, Personnel Contact Programs, Tutorials and Study Centres.
Gauhati University has launched the first campus radio of North-East on March 1, 2011. The main objective of the the community radio is to share stories, and experiences and help students get familarise with media industry.
The university has implemented approximately 100 computers under Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) that is connected to campus LAN and a Virtual Digital Learning Environment. All the classes are conducted via FOSS to create a better learning experience for the students who have enrolled in distance courses.

A student can apply either online or offline. For offline application, a student can visit the university campus or any of the authorised study centres of the university with all the requisite documents. After reaching there, a student can obtain the application form, fill it, attach all the documents and pay the application fee.
In case of online application, a student has to fill the online application form by visiting the university’s official website. A student will have to take a print out of the filled application form and submit it to any of the authorised study centres along with all the requisite documents for verification. After the verification, a student has to submit the admission fee.
